Listen, I know that animated movies are supposed to be for kids, but let’s just all agree that they are really for the kid in all of us.  Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks are doing amazing things for the animated movie industry and I am just here to give them a little credit.  Here are my five favorite animated movies:

  1. Tangled

One of my favorite Disney Movies of all time.  A girl is kidnapped as baby for her magical hair and is kept in a tower by her kidnapper who poses as her mother.  She is eventually rescued (I use that word loosely as she pretty much forced him to to take her) by a thief who stumbles upon her tower.  The cinematography is beautiful, the songs are great, and the chameleon sidekick is cute as heck.

2. Shrek

A seriously funny movie. A++.  Almost every line of this movie is quotable and you will never watch it and not laugh.  Guaranteed.  So the plot: a cynical ogre takes an overzealous donkey on a road trip to get his swamp back as its been taken over by fairy tale creatures.  Of course there is a love story too, but its predominantly about friendship.  Between an ogre and a donkey.  I’m pretty sure the people who made this movie are on crack.

3. Finding Nemo

finding nemo

An epic drama about a kidnapped child taken from his home.  His father faces his fears and encounters various dangers and life-threatening situations in order to find his son.  I’m kind of kidding, but not really.  One of Pixar’s best movies, Finding Nemo is really the story of a young fish who gets taken from the ocean.  His dad meets a fish who has short-term memory loss (Dory is the best part of this movie and Finding Dory is one of the best Pixar sequels ever.).  Great for kids and adults.

4. How to Train Your Dragon

I don’t know what it is about this movie; it just makes me happy.  HTTYD follows Hiccup, the son of the town’s Viking leader, who is kind of scrawny.  He doesn’t have any athletic abilities or any willingness to kill a dragon, which is his town’s favorite past-time.  So, of course, he ends up seriously injuring one of the most elusive dragons around.  Hiccup and the dragon, Toothless, become the most adorable of friends.  I know it’s a kid movie, but it’s seriously adorable.  Give it a try.

5. The Emperor’s New Groove

emporers new groove

A reigning monarch gets turned into a llama.  Do you really need anymore convincing? i mean, really? Anyways, David Spade voices Kuzco, a conceited, self-absorbed emperor who gets turned into a llama by his advisor Yzma (her face is a little nightmare-inducing, be warned).  An epic chase ensues throughout the land and the one-liners are laugh out loud hilarious.  If you haven’t already seen it, what are you doing?
